Dreams of Gods & Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #3) by Laini Taylor

“Once upon a time, there was only darkness. And there were monsters vast as worlds who swam in it.”
Summary
Two worlds are poised on the brink of a vicious war. By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera’s rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her. When the brutal angel emperor brings his army to the human world, Karou and Akiva are finally reunited – not in love, but in a tentative alliance against their common enemy. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people. And, perhaps, for themselves. But with even bigger threats on the horizon, are Karou and Akiva strong enough to stand among the gods and monsters? The New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy comes to a stunning conclusion as – from the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond – humans, chimaera, and seraphim strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.Personal Experiences
I am not going to lie. I am kind of disappointed. Don’t hate on me just yet. The book was beautifully written, depicting a world that finally brought together all the races of the worlds in harmony. Depicting the fulfillment of Karou and Akiva’s dream. Suspense laced each chapter as the climax got closer and closer and fizzled out into nothingness. Karou and Akiva’s relationship blossomed into an unbreakable thread tying them together. New characters were brought forth with backstories so horrific and gruesome but with fates that brought light into the world. And Joram was a worthy archenemy for them all. As a whole, the book brought the series to a fantastical close. But for me personally, I hated the ending. I wish that there was a fourth book not because Karou and Akiva call to a part of me that I cannot let go of (which if I am honest, they kind of do) but because in my opinion there were still parts of the story that I do not think were neatly folded into the ball of yarn that is a series.SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
At the very end of the book we were introduced to the idea that it was the destiny of the main characters to defeat the beasts that existed just outside of Eretz and become the godstars of legend. In my opinion this would have been an epic battle where Karou and Akiva could battle side-by-side for the first time and Mik and Zuze could show off some fighting skills that they had worked hard to hone.
In addition, Karou has a job to fulfill as the resurrectionist to bring back the souls that they gleaned from Loramendi. This is a huge task and undertaking that will require a huge tithe (which may or may not be the pain tithe but a new kind of tithe that the Stelian taught her).
Lastly, there is the small matter of Karou and Akiva never actually having sex.
Each of these things represents for me a string that is left hanging out of the neat yarn ball that Taylor made as she brought her series to a close.
The reason that I want a fourth book is to tie up these loose ends. Not to mention that while seraphim and chimera are living together, lasting peace, Karou and Akiva’s dream, has not yet been achieved. I wish that Taylor had better tied up the loose ends in her last book rather than focusing the epilogue on the longing felt between Karou and Akiva and finally bringing them together (which I have to admit was still a pretty sweet ending).
