“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.
It did not end well.”

Summary

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Personal Experiences

If I am honest, I think this is one of the few books that have been haunting me for years – whether from my TBR list or in libraries and bookstores wherever I went. Finally, I sat down to read it. But I did not read it. I devoured it.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone officially broke my book dry spell. I became immersed in this new world, forever changed by its addicting pages. At first, I was cautious. There were faint scents of magic coming off from the pages of the book, but there was no concrete proof of it within the book. And this frustrated me. Why was I just as clueless as Karou as to who she was and her place in the world? Why did I pass chapter after chapter, confused as ever.

But once I realized who Karou was (well before Taylor made it entirely clear, I might add), I realized that those chapters that I frustratingly flipped through, dying for even a glimpse of truth, were all a suspenseful build-up to the big reveal. I realized that I had fallen prey to the exact tactic that Taylor had employed on her audience. And was I grateful to have fallen prey to Taylor’s Elsewhere.

The storytelling of this book is so unique; the romance so forbidden, and yet not cliché; the characters so bedazzling (especially Karou with her blue hair); the magic system so different and so curious.

I wish I had fallen prey to Taylor’s tactics sooner.

Quotes

“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”

“It’s not like there’s a law against flying.”
“Yes there is. The law of gravity.”

“Love is a luxury.”
“No. Love is an element.”
An element. Like air to breathe, earth to stand on.”
